L'Age D'or

L'Age D'or can translate to 'The Golden Age' or Age Of Gold'

The story of L'Age D'or is a surrealist tale of a man and woman who are in love with each other however their attempts of consummating their love are continually stopped/thwarted by family, church-goers, bourgeois and society.

The couple are seen at first creating a disturbance by making love in mud during a religious ceremony (church service). The man is stopped, apprehended and taken away by 2 men who begin struggling to control the sudden impulses of their active. The man manages to break free momentarily, long enough to kick a small dog. Later on he struggles free and aggressively crushes a Beatle with his shoe. As he gets escorted through the streets, he spots an advertisement that he is fixated by about a woman's hand rubbing herself, and soon becomes fascinated by another showing a woman's leg in silk stockings. He eventually frees himself and escapes then inexplicably attacks a blind man by a curb then gets into a taxi.

In the mean time, the woman is at home, where she tells her mother she hurt her finger (that had been wrapped up in a bandage) - which appears and disappears from scene to scene. The woman and her parents attend a party where the guests seem oblivious to the alarming and incongruous events in their midst: a maid screams and falls onto the floor after walking through a doorway where flames are visible; a horse-drawn cart (filled with rowdy men that are drinking from large bottles) passes through the elegant company in the ballroom; the father converses with guests, whilst ignoring multiple flies on her face; and a small boy is shot and killed for a minor prank.

The man arrives at the party and sees his lover from across the room; he behaves brusquely towards the other guests while looking lasciviously in the woman's direction as she looks thirstily at him. The woman's mother hands the man a drink, but spills a little drop on his hand. He becomes enraged and slaps the woman's mum, which seemed to give joy to her daughter. As they were seeking sexual release from their tension, the couple decide to go into the garden and make love next to a marble statue, while the other party guests begin assembling outsider ab orchestral performance of Liebstod. When the man is called away to answer the telephone, the woman sublimates her sexual tension by sucking on the toe of the statue until he returned.

The liebestod music stopped abruptly when the conductor walks away gripping his head with his hands, and wanders into the garden where the couple are. The woman runs to comfort the old conductor before finally French kissing him. The man stands up, bumping his head on a hanging flower pot, and grasps his head in pain as he leaves the garden. He stumbles up to her room where he throws a burning tree, a bishop, a plow, the bishops staff, a giraffe statue and handfuls of pillow feathers out of the window.

The final vignette is an allusion to the Marquis de Sade's 1785 novel (first published in 1904) the 120 days of Sodom- the intertitle reads: 120 days of Depraved Acts - and is about an orgy in a castle, where the survivor of the orgy is ready to emerge to mainstream society. From the castle doors emerged a bearded and berobed Duc de Blangis, who greatly resembles Jesus - who comforts a young woman who has run out of the castle before he takes her back inside. After that, a woman's scream is heard, and only the Duc re-emerges and is beardless. The final image is Christian cross festooned with the scalps of women; to the accompaniment of jovial music, the scalps sway in the wind.
