Non-diegetic sound can manipulate the emotions of audiences and creates meanings. Internal diegetic- A characters thoughts. It's coming from the story world but only the character and the audience can hear it. Synchronous sound- You can see the object making that sound. Asynchronous sound- Sound that is offscreen. You can't see what is making the sound. Contrapuntal- The sound contradicts the images and they don't match.
